We came across this beautiful church while biking in along the North Sea coast. The New Church in Emden (Ostfriesland) is a Protestant-Reformed preaching church. It was built in the years 1643-1648 as the first post-Reformation church in northern Germany in the moderate Baroque style. During the Second World War, it was destroyed to the outer walls and then rebuilt in a modified form. Special characteristic is the roof rider with gallery on which a Habsburg crown perched. Thus Emden emphasized their independence from the East Frisian sovereigns, only the emperor they were subordinated. The cock sitting above the crown is a sign of a reformed church.
Gorgeous! That weather vane is certainly sitting prettily on the crown. Beautiful photographs. I will include a link back to your post in next week’s weather vane challenge.
